2nd IZA/HSE Workshop: Ten Years after the Financial Crisis - Labor Market Adjustment in Emerging and Post-Transition Economies

Event ended

Call for Papers

Organizers: Hartmut Lehmann (University of Bologna and IZA), Vladimir Gimpelson (Higher School of Economics and IZA), Rostislav Kapeliushnikov (Higher School of Economics) and Alexander Muravyev (Higher School of Economics and IZA)

Place: Moscow, Russian Federation

Dates: October 11 - October 12, 2018

Many post-transition and emerging economies have been particularly hard hit by the Financial Crisis and the Great Recession. Some economies had to go through very large recessionary shocks that had long-lasting effects for the labor market, human capital formation and growth. The Great Recession also slowed down systemic reform efforts in many countries. Hence, it strikes us as important to take stock of the performance of post-transition and emerging economies nearly ten years after the Great Recession, putting the focus on labor market adjustments and outcomes. It is instructive to look at how workers, firms and governments adjusted in the labor market to the economic shocks that occurred and which challenges lie still ahead to overcome the aftermath of the crisis.

This second IZA/Higher School of Economics workshop will bring together labor economists who are working on labor market adjustment in the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Central Asian former Soviet Republics and China. While the main focus of the workshop is on the specified topic, papers on other labor market themes pertinent in emerging and post-transition will also be considered.
